Day One

Fly to Edinburgh and transfer to your hotel. After check-in, the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the secluded glens and riverside walks of the surroundings before dinner at the hotel.

Day Two

Today we'll follow the stunningly scenic route from the Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness, as featured by Michael Palin in his series 'Great Railway Journeys of World'. Along the way we'll pass through the spectacular landscapes used in the filming of the BBC TV series 'Hamish Macbeth'.

Day Three

Our second excursion is a nostalgic trip on the Strathspey Steam Railway. The nine-and-a-half-mile journey through unspoilt Highland scenery ends in Aviemore, where you're free to explore. You may also like to join our optional excursion on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway, the UK's longest funicular, which is renowned for its magnificent views.

Day Four

Our final trip takes us 42 miles along the dramatic West Highland Line to Mallaig, overlooking the Isle of Skye. We'll cross the spectacular 21-arch Glenfinnan viaduct and rumble past the white sands of Morar. Once in Mallaig you can walk the hills, explore the Heritage Centre or visit the kipper smokery.

Day Five

Transfer back to Edinburgh for your return flight home. Depending on your departure time, there may be time to explore this beautiful city before you head to the airport.

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately three hours.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Locomotives used

Please note, the West Highland and Kyle lines are both scheduled ScotRail services, and use diesel-powered engines.

Itinerary changes

Due to timetable changes and other factors outside our control, it may be necessary to alter the order of the excursions on your holiday. Please note that on 31st March, 7th April, 14th April, and 20th and 21st October the Strathspey Railway will not be operating. A day exploring Loch Ness will be offered instead.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair or electric scooter, please let us know as soon as possible so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
